- Austrian artist Birgt Jürgenssen (1949 - 2003) was one of the most outstanding feminist avant-garde artists. Starting with the liberating potential of Surrealism, she developed a dialogue with her generation's discourse of social critique, leading to the production of a multi-layered, stylistically multifaceted kind of art in the late 1960s. The female body and its metamorphosis were one focus of her work, which was predominately made up of drawing, painting and photography. Peter Weibel called Birgit Jürgenssen the “missing link”, discovered at last, in the history of Austrian feminism between Maria Lassnig and Valie Export, or, internationally, from Francesca Woodman to Cindy Sherman. “Birgit Jürgenssen represents a contemporary position in succession of Meret Oppenheim and Louise Bourgeois.” (Weibel)
