The New Jersey Meadowlands Commission is the planning and zoning authority for the 30.4-square-mile Meadowlands District, which consists of portions of 14 municipalities in Bergen and Hudson counties. The agency was created by an Act of the state Legislature in 1968 and tasked with a three-fold mandate: to provide for orderly development of the region, to provide facilities for the sanitary disposal of solid waste and to protect the delicate balance of nature.
