- Protea Book House had its inception in 1992 as an intimate book store in Pretoria. Soon afterwards the publishing division was born. Today Protea is the biggest independent publisher in South Africa and it has fifteen retail outlets across the country. With publications ranging from children’s books to important academic works, fiction, poetry, history and biographies, Protea is constantly encouraging important literature in both English and Afrikaans. Apart from finding new talent or delving into the past to republish timeless titles, Protea has published internationally known authors like Al J. Venter and the photographers Roger Ballen and Jurgen Schadeberg. Wellknown and beloved South African authors on Protea’s publication list include, amongst others, Hennie Aucamp, Jeanne Goosen, Pieter W. Grobbelaar, Dot Serfontein, Karel Schoeman, Daniel Hugo, Doc Immelman, Anton Prinsloo, Riana Scheepers and Koos Kombuis.
