- The Official Language Committee was formed in 1957 to undertake all activities to extend and improve the usage of Tamil in Government administration. Later the Directorate of Tamil Development was constituted in 1968 on the basis of the functions of this Committee. Steps relating to the implementation of the Official Language Scheme and Tamil Development are carried out by this Department. To extend the usage of Tamil as the official language in all departments of the Government, the Directorate of Tamil Development conducts periodical inspection right from the departments of the Secretariat down to the subordinate offices and gives them necessary guidance and modifications. The Directorate of Tamil Development is constantly looking after the implementation of Tamil language in all administrative performances.
